LA CROSSE - The University
of Wisconsin-Stevens Point got all the preliminaries out of the way Monday
night.
UWSP wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule in style.
Nick Bennett scored 22 points and Jason Kalsow added 21, as the Pointers
throttled Viterbo College 67-52 at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium.
The outcome leaves UWSP 14-3 on the season, including a perfect 9-0 against
teams outside the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
"This was a good take-off game for the rest of the week," said Pointer coach
Jack Bennett, whose team will host UW-Stout Wednesday in a rare 6 p.m.
start.
The Pointers never trailed in the game and enjoyed a 34-22 lead at halftime.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half, as the V-Hawks only hit
27 percent of their shots (6-for-22) and were limited to one basket over the
final 11 minutes.
Brian Bauer contributed 10 points. Kalsow grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds,
as UWSP held a 39-28 on the backboards.
"They played us real physical. For the most part I thought we stood up to
their physicality and matched it," said coach Bennett.
Former Amherst athlete Travis Bassett had two points for the V-Hawks.
