UW-Superior Upsets
Sixth-Ranked Pointers
Central Wisconsin Sunday
Box Score
SUPERIOR - Heading into the
weekend in a five-way tie atop the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will leave it looking
up at the leaders..
UW-Superior outrebounded UWSP,
ranked sixth in the nation, and spent more time at the foul line to pull out
a 57-54 win over the Pointers on Saturday.
Cody Kastern scored 17 points
and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Yellowjackets (7-8, 3-5 WIAC) and
was the only Superior player in double figures.
Jason Kalsow put up a
game-high 18 points and grabbed 12 boards for the Pointers (12-3, 4-3 WIAC),
and Tamaris Releford added 11 as UWSP hit 45 percent from the floor to
outshoot the Yellowjackets.
"They're a hard-nosed,
physical team, " UWSP coach Jack Bennett said. "But we get to the
line 11 times, and they get to the line 25 ... it's something we're getting
used to, I guess."
Superior went 11-of-25 at the
free throw line, while UWSP hit seven-of-11. It was the fourth straight game
in which the Pointers saw their opponents toe the foul line significantly
more than they.
The Yellowjackets' physical
play showed up in the rebounding category as well, where they outboarded the
Pointers 39-28; the third time in four game that UWSP's opponent had had
more rebounds.
Superior led 55-52 with three
minutes, two seconds left, but neither team scored until 14 ticks remained.
In that stretch, the Pointers
had opportunities but grabbed no offensive rebounds.
Kalsow grabbed a defensive
board with 2:30 left, but the Pointers immediately turned the ball over.
Brett Hirsch snared a defensive board with 1:41 left but missed a layup on
the other end. Kalsow missed a shot with 31 seconds left, but a Pointer foul
put Superior on the line. Kalsow snagged a defensive rebound off the missed
free throws, but Nick Bennett missed a shot at the other end and Superior
grabbed that rebound as well.
All told, on UWSP's offensive
end of the floor, Superior won the rebounding battle 23-4.
Prior to hitting two free
throws with time expired, Bennett, the team's second-leading scorer, put up
five points and was shut out in the second half.
"When they play him that
hard, I'd like to think other things open up," the coach said.
"All of our players play well in stretches. But it's hard when they're
giving it everything they have but physically they're wearing down." |
