MENOMONIE - The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's basketball team
refused to be a victim of a snow job Wednesday night.
After enduring a long bus trip on sloppy roads, UWSP, ranked second by
D3hoops.com poll, came out on fire and drilled UW-Stout 73-64 in a Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Pointers (7-0, 2-0 WIAC) put the game on ice in the opening half,
building an insurmountable 43-23 lead at halftime. They shot 55 percent from
the field (16-for-29), including eight of 15 from 3-point range.
"I think we played one of the better first halves we have all year," said
UWSP coach Jack Bennett. "We shot 55 percent and hit eight 3-pointers.
Anytime you do that that's going to be good for you."
No one had a hotter hand than the Pointers Jason Kalsow, who connected on
six of his seven field goal attempts in the first half. He scored 14 of his
team-high 20 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Kalsow accounted for seven points as UWSP raced out to a quick 18-5 lead. A
13-2 run to close out the first half put the Pointers in command.
"For our first time on the road after six games at home, I thought we played
a really good game," said Bennett. "The biggest thing for us is that we've
been able to get two early wins against two of the best teams in the
conference." Also scoring in double figures for the Pointers were Nick
Bennett with 16 points and Neal Krajnik, who netted 14.
Andy Bray paced three Blue Devils in double digits with 18 points. Jeff
Vandenberghe added 14 and Nate Templer had 11 on a frigid 4-of-19 shooting
from the field.
Stout got as close as 70-64 with 29 seconds left in regulation.
"I have to give Stout credit because they never let up," coach Bennett said.
"We got up big early. But they pressed us, and maybe we got a little timid
defensively." The Pointers will
compete in the Las Vegas Tournament starting Dec. 21.
