Pointers First Loss of the Year

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. � Resurgent UW-Platteville
handed No. 2 UW-Stevens Point its first loss of the year, defeating the
Pointers 63-60 Wednesday night in a loud Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers, winners of four of their last five for first-year coach Paul
Combs, improved to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference. The Pointers dropped to 11-1, 3-1.
UWP was clutch from the line, hitting 20-25, while the Pointers made 3-4.
The Pioneers made 19 of their first 21, but missed three in the final 15
seconds that gave the Pointers a chance.
After a UWSP turnover, Brad Reitzner was fouled with 14.6 seconds remaining.
Reitzner who was 13-13 at the line, missed both free throws. Frank
McGettigan then made a key steal and was fouled with 1.6 seconds left. He
missed the first, then made the second. After a timeout, the Pointers
inbounded the ball all the way down the floor to Jason Kalsow, who dribbled
out to the 3-point line, then fired from the top of the key. His shot rimmed
out at the buzzer.
Reitzner led the Pioneers with 23 points, while McGettigan recorded a
career-high with 19 points. He scored 11 of the Pioneers' first 16 points,
helping the Pioneers to a 16-10 early lead. The Pioneers led the entire
first half until Nick Bennett drained a 3-point shot with three seconds
left, giving the Pointers a 34-32 lead.
The Pointers extend their lead to 45-39 before the Pioneers tied the score
at 45-45. UWP led 55-51 at the 5:09 mark when Pointer coach Jack Bennett was
hit with his second technical foul and ejected. Reitzner finished the second
of his two free throws after the foul and then made both free throws from
the technical, making the score 58-51.
UWSP cut the lead to 62-60 on Tamaris Relerford's layup at the 2:05 mark,
but no one would score again until McGettigan's final free throw.
Kalsow led the Pointers with 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists,
while Brian Bauer scored 12 points.
Brandon Temperly added 10 points for the Pioneers, while Tom Uppena grabbed
a game-high 10 rebounds.
The victory came one night after the Pioneer women knocked their UW-Stevens
Point counterparts from the ranks of the unbeatens on the same floor,
beating the No. 1 Pointers 78-61. |
