UW-Oshkosh in Las Vegas Tourney
Box Score
For the first time in 179 all-time
meetings, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh met outside the state of Wisconsin
with UW-Stevens Point claiming a 63-55 victory over the Titans in the Las
Vegas Desert Shootout championship game on Monday.
UW-Stevens Points
Jason Kalsow led all scorers with 21 points in the first time the teams have
played a regular season game outside of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference schedule since the 1929-30 season. The Pointers, ranked
second in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, improved to 9-0 for the
season, but got all they could handle from the Titans, who are now 7-2.
The game was tied
26-26 at halftime and tied again at 35-35 with 13 minutes left before Eric
Maus and Neal Krajnik hit back-to-back baskets to put the Pointers up 39-35
and they never trailed again. UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 41-40 with 11:15
left when Brian Bauer drained two three-pointers around a pair of Titans
free throws to give the Pointers a 47-42 lead with 7:15 left.
UW-Oshkoshs Kyle
Peterson scored on a driving layup and was fouled to cut the lead with 51-47
with 2:55 left, but Nick Bennett responded with a short jumper for the
Pointers and then hit two free throws with 1:15 left to push the lead back
to eight points. UW-Stevens Point missed four of its next six free throws,
but rebounded two of the misses and sealed the win down the stretch.
Jim Capelle led
the Titans with 16 points and Bennett added 13 points for the Pointers, who
committed just four turnovers and have won 34 straight regular season
non-conference games. UW-Oshkosh is now 74-5 in its last 79 non-conference
contests. The teams are both 2-0 in the WIAC and meet again on Jan. 21 in
Stevens Point and Feb. 17 in Oshkosh.
It was the first
time the Pointers have played a WIAC foe in a non-league game since 1981-82
when they beat UW-La Crosse in the consolation game of the St. Cloud State
tournament. |
