Kalsow, Bennett Named to All-WIAC Mens Basketball Squad

Every team was represented on the 10-member All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference mens basketball squad, but UW-Stevens Point was the only team with two selections as juniors Jason Kalsow and Nick Bennett both earned first team honors.

The Pointers enter this weeks NCAA Division III tournament with a 23-5 overall record after claiming their first WIAC tournament title since 2000. UW-Stevens Point is now 111-27 over the past five seasons after winning the WIAC regular season crown the previous four years.

The all-conference squad was made up of the leagues top 10 individual scorers. Kalsow ranked second in the league at 17.9 points per game and Bennett was seventh at 15.4 points per game.

Kalsow, a Huntley, Ill. native, earned his second straight all-conference honor and did much more than score this year for the Pointers. He also ranks third in the league in rebounding at 7.6 per game and third in assists at 3.6 per game. Kalsow was fourth in field goal percentage at 53.8 percent and scored in double figures in every game. He has started every game the past three years and now has 1,140 career points.

Bennett, a Stevens Point Area Senior High graduate, is one of the leagues top shooters, ranking second in free throw shooting at 85.2 percent, fifth in three-point shooting at 45.8 percent and sixth in field goal percentage at 48.2 percent. It is the second straight year he has ranked in the top six of the league in all three categories. Bennett hit a three-pointer in 26 of the teams 28 games.

UW-River Falls senior Rich Melzer was the Player of the Year for the second straight year and Falcons coach Rick Bowen earned Coach of the Year honors.
