UW-SP crushes Trinity in season opener

During the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team's regular season opener against Trinity Inter-national Friday, the power to the shot clock was cut off three times in the first half, forcing the game stop temporarily.

These were the only times in the game the Pointers did not whip past their NAIA Division II opponents as they crushed Trojans 90-28 at the Quandt Fieldhouse.

"I thought it was a great start for our team tonight," said Pointers head coach Jack Bennett. "There were certain thing we wanted to accomplish, regardless of what the score was and, for the most part, I thought we took care of the ball and we were able to cash in."

All but one player scored for the Pointers, with Josh Iserloth leading the way with 16 points on 70 percent shooting.

"I am glad that Izzy shot the ball well tonight," Bennett said. "He had not been shooting well at all in our scrimmages. I kept telling him to trust your stroke and I think he stroked it nicely tonight."

While the quality of the game was not near the level the Pointers will face against their WIAC rivals this season, the game did showcase a new roster with added height and brawn in the paint.

"I will be very disappointed if we are not a better rebounding with the height that we brought in," Bennett said. "You could see the makings of it tonight.

"I thought the guys had it all together tonight. But, I think we will really find out when we go up against a little stiffer competition," he said.

The tougher foes will come fast and furious for the Pointers as they take to the road for their next four games, beginning Sunday when they face Coe College of Iowa.

"This is not exactly the kind of schedule I like because we are going to be on the road for a while," Bennett said. This is where we will find out if we are mentally ready for this season.

"We got some answers tonight, but we'll know more over the next few games," he said.
