PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's basketball team
shook off Wednesday's eight-point loss at La Crosse and finished up a three-game
road swing with a 73-66 defeat of Platteville Saturday.
The Pointers improve to 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
and 16-5 overall.
UW-SP began the road trip with a 91-80 overtime win at Whitewater before losing
to the Eagles Wednesday. Pointers head coach Jack Bennett is pleased with where
his team is sitting heading into the final four games of the regular season.
"This puts us right back in the hunt," he said. "I said to our
staff that, if we could get two of these last three, that we'd be sitting pretty
well."
Platteville (6-7 WIAC, 13-9) led 27-16 with 7:09 to play in the first half when
the Pointers sparked a 13-4 run to put them down by just two at halftime. UW-SP
then scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 39-31 lead with
16:05 to play in the game.
The Pioneers closed the gap to 46-45, but the Pointers scored the next nine
points and secured the victory.
Freshman Jason Kalsow was the leading scorer for UW-SP with 21 points and joined
Josh Iserloth - who finished with 11 points - with a team-high seven rebounds.
Other players in double figures were Kalonji Kadima with 16 points - including a
perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line - and Neal Krajnik with 13 points.
Tyler Selk was the leading scorer for Platteville with 22 points, followed by
Bryan Stangel with 12.
The Pointers return to Quandt Fieldhouse Wednesday when they host Eau Claire.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. They will wrap up the 2001-02 regular season next week
with two home games against River Falls Feb. 13 and Superior Feb. 16.
