Pointer men fall to Stout in OT
CW Sunday sports

MENOMONIE - Nate Templer scored 16 points and was one of the UW-Stout men's basketball team's leading scorers Saturday against UW-Stevens Point.

His free throw with 59 seconds remaining might have been the most important point of the game as it tied the score at 79 and sent the Blue Devils and Pointers into overtime.

In the extra period, UW-SP was not able to regain the lead and lost to Stout 95-89. The Pointers fall to 5-4 in the WIAC and 13-4 overall while Stout improves to 3-6 in the WIAC and 9-7 overall.

UW-SP was able to maintain the lead for much of the second half in part to the successful contribution of Brent Larson. He scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including four 3-pointers.

Stout scored two quick points on free throws by Dave Larson three seconds into the overtime and did not relinquish the scoring advantage. Stevens Point Area Senior High alum Pat Von Feldt scored five of his 14 points in the extra five minutes of action.

The Pointers lead was up to as many as 13 points in the first half. But Stout wiped the lead away in the final 6:44 minutes of the first half to grab a 45-41 lead at halftime.

Aaron Vachowiak joined Templer as the Blue Devils' top scorer with 16 points, including his 1,000th career point. Oties Epps scored 13 points for Stout and Jeff Vanenberghe chimed in with 11 points.

Joe Zuiker contributed 16 points and nine rebounds for the Pointers, while teammate Josh Iserloth added 15 points and eight rebounds.

The victory was only the third time Stout has beaten Stevens Point since the 1985-86 season.

The Pointers return to action Wednesday when they host Whitewater. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Quandt Fieldhouse.
