CW Sunday sports

PLATTEVILLE - The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team was looking to rebound more than just the ball Saturday.

After its 10-point loss to Eau Claire Wednesday, the Pointers kept their hopes of repeating their WIAC championship alive with a 71-59 win over Platteville.

"This win allows us to continue to battle in this tough conference," said head coach Jack Bennett. "Simply put, we did what we do best and it paid off."

The win improves the Pointers record to 3-2 in the WIAC and 11-2 overall.

Joe Zuiker was the leading score for UW-SP with 16 points while Brent Larson added 13 points, including seven of the team's final 10 points.

UW-SP possessed a 61-59 lead with 4:46 to play when Larson nailed a long-range 3-pointer which put the Pointers up by five.

Kalonji Kadima also cracked into double-digit scoring with 10 points.

Tyler Selk was the game's leading scorer with 24 points while teammate Beau Buchs finished with 11.

All facets of the Pointers offense appeared to be in sync against Platteville.

UW-SP made 50.9 percent (28-for-55) of their field goal attempts, including eight 3-pointers.

The Pioneers shot 35.6 percent from the field.

Trailing by one as time wound down in the first half, Derek Kind gave the Pointers the lead for good when he drained a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining. The shot put the Pointers ahead 40-38 at halftime.

UW-SP is back in action Wednesday when they host River Falls. Game time is 7 p.m. at Quandt Fieldhouse.
