Shorthanded Success
Lifts Pointers to Thrilling Win
Box Score
On a night where special teams units saw plenty of ice
time, it was UW-Stevens Points that gained the upper hand by scoring three
shorthanded goals in a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over UW-Superior Friday at
Willett Arena.
In fact, even the game-winner came with the Pointers a
man down as Nick Zebro scored with 1:44 remaining in overtime to give UW-Stevens
Point its third victory over a ranked team this season by toppling the
seventh-ranked Yellowjackets. The Pointers are now 5-5 overall and have played
six ranked foes among their 10 games.
UW-Stevens Points three shorthanded scores marked the
11th time thats happened in NCAA Division III history and only the third time
since 1992. Lebanon Valley (Pa.) accomplished the feat twice during the 2002
season.
UW-Superior also scored shorthanded as the two teams
combined for 36 penalties, but featured dismal power play numbers. The Pointers
were 1-for-11 with the man advantage and UW-Superior was 0-for-10, while
allowing the three shorthanded goals.
The Yellowjackets opened the game with a quick start
as Eric Bausano scored just 1:41 into the game off a rebound on a shot by Derek
Miller. UW-Stevens Point bounced back with consecutive breakaway shorthanded
goals by Sean Fish at the 8:24 mark of the first period and 1:54 mark of the
second period.
A minute later, the Pointers had a lengthy
five-on-three power play, but just as the first of the two Yellowjackets
penalties expired, UW-Superiors Mike Bickley broke away to even the game at the
4:41 mark with a shorthanded goal. The Pointers regained the lead less than two
minutes later with the games lone power play goal when Nate Sorenson ripped a
shot into the upper corner off a pass from Fish. UW-Superior tied the game at
3-3 at the 11:01 mark of the second period as Seth Rada scored off a pass from
Rob Turnville.
From that point, the game was marred by numerous
penalties. The Yellowjackets were whistled for a five-minute major penalty
midway through the third period and the Pointers also were granted a
five-on-three power play for over a minute late in the period, but could not
take advantage of either.
UW-Superior had a four-on-three power play in
overtime, but shortly after the play returned to five-on-four, Zebro took a pass
from Forgione and drilled a shot past Yellowjackets goaltender Baron Bradley
for the game-winner.
UW-Stevens Point outshot the Yellowjackets 37-22 for
the game, including 13-2 in the third period and 4-1 in overtime. |
