Pointers Fall Victim
to Superior in Third Period

After playing two even periods, seventh-ranked
UW-Superior pulled away from the UW-Stevens Point men�s hockey team in the third
for a 5-3 victory in Saturday�s season-opener at Willett Arena.
The Yellowjackets broke a 2-2 tie in the decisive
period with three straight goals to win the game between league rivals that did
not count in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
UW-Superior scored goals in the first minute and a
half of each period, including a quick score from Mike Bickley just 13 seconds
into the game. The Pointers, however, wasted no time to answer as Taylor Guay
tipped a long shot from Colin Trulock into the net.
Myles Palliser scored 1:08 into the second period for
the Yellowjackets and the Pointers countered with a score from Mark Peters
midway through the period. Peters rebounded a shot by Russel Law that was set up
by a long pass from Trulock down the center of the ice.
UW-Superior went ahead for good at the 1:22 mark of
the third period on a goal from Colin Guiget. Aaron Berman followed with a score
less than seven minutes later and Rob Turville scored shortly thereafter for a
three-goal lead.
The Pointers had nine power plays in the game and
scored on their final man-advantage when Shane Foster scored off an assist from
Tom Vernelli.
UW-Superior held a 34-32 advantage in shots as
Yellowjackets� netminder Baron Bradley and Pointers� goaltender Marcus Paulson
each stopped 29 shots. |
