Pointers Fall Victim to Superior in Third Period

Box Score

After playing two even periods, seventh-ranked UW-Superior pulled away from the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team in the third for a 5-3 victory in Saturdays season-opener at Willett Arena.

The Yellowjackets broke a 2-2 tie in the decisive period with three straight goals to win the game between league rivals that did not count in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

UW-Superior scored goals in the first minute and a half of each period, including a quick score from Mike Bickley just 13 seconds into the game. The Pointers, however, wasted no time to answer as Taylor Guay tipped a long shot from Colin Trulock into the net.

Myles Palliser scored 1:08 into the second period for the Yellowjackets and the Pointers countered with a score from Mark Peters midway through the period. Peters rebounded a shot by Russel Law that was set up by a long pass from Trulock down the center of the ice.

UW-Superior went ahead for good at the 1:22 mark of the third period on a goal from Colin Guiget. Aaron Berman followed with a score less than seven minutes later and Rob Turville scored shortly thereafter for a three-goal lead.

The Pointers had nine power plays in the game and scored on their final man-advantage when Shane Foster scored off an assist from Tom Vernelli.

UW-Superior held a 34-32 advantage in shots as Yellowjackets netminder Baron Bradley and Pointers goaltender Marcus Paulson each stopped 29 shots.
