Pointers Sweep Regular Season Series at Superior

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point finished off a regular season mens hockey sweep of UW-Superior for the first time since 1999-2000 after defeating the Yellowjackets 4-3 on Saturday in Superior.

The Pointers potent line of Russel Law, Sean Fish and Rolf Ulvin was the impetus for victory again on Saturday, scoring three of the teams goals and six of the seven of the goals during the weekend.

The game was another pivotal battle for position in the tight Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings as the Pointers improved to 11-7-3 overall and 5-4-1 in the NCHA, while UW-Superior is 11-8-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the league. UW-Stevens Point also beat the Yellowjackets 4-3 in overtime earlier this year.

After UW-Superior scored the games first goal midway through the first period, Brett Coburn tied the game for the Pointers with an assist from James Jernberg at the 15:39 mark of the period.

UW-Stevens Point, which has scored over half of its goals this season in the second period, continued its solid play in the middle frame with two more goals to build a 3-1 lead. Law scored off passes from Fish and Ulvin just 27 seconds into the period and Ulvin scored with assists from Law and Nate Sorenson at the 8:42 mark.

It took the Yellowjackets just 31 seconds into the third period to pull within a goal, but the Pointers answered with a goal assisted by Sorenson and Law at the 6:38 mark to regain the two-goal lead. Derek Miller scored for the Yellowjackets with 4:01 remaining, but the Yellowjackets were unable to get the equalizer despite holding a 28-18 advantage in shots.

Marcus Paulson made 25 saves for the Pointers as UW-Stevens Point snapped a five-game regular season losing streak in Superior.
