Three power play goals lifted the UW-Stevens Point
men�s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over third-ranked St. Thomas in a
non-conference game Friday in St. Paul, Minn.
The Tommies were last season�s national runner-up as
the Pointers played their second highly-ranked opponent to open the season after
playing seventh-ranked UW-Superior last week.
Sophomore goaltender Bryn Davies made 30 saves and the
Pointers got goals from a sophomore and two freshmen in the victory.
Defenseman Colin Trulock scored the game�s first goal
3:29 into the contest before the Tommies evened the game on a score by Kevin
Rollwagen at the 10:31 mark of the period. Nate Sorenson and Russel Law assisted
Trulock�s goal.
Brett Beckfeld scored at the 8:10 mark of the second
period with assists from Chris Gehrke and Rolf Ulvin before Sean Fish added a
goal 6:44 into the third period with assists from Trulock and Sorenson to put
the Pointers up 3-1. Rollwagen scored again with 5:03 left, but the Pointers
held off the Tommies to secure the victory.
Sorenson�s two assists match his season total from
last year, while Trulock already has matched his season point total from a year
ago with four points in the first two games.
The Pointers fired 30 shots on goal and were
three-for-eight on the power play, while killing all four of the Tommies�
penalties.
UW-Stevens Point hosts St. Mary�s on Saturday at 7:30
p.m. at Willett Arena.
