Pointers Power Past Third-Ranked St. Thomas

Box Score

Three power play goals lifted the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team to a 3-2 victory over third-ranked St. Thomas in a non-conference game Friday in St. Paul, Minn.

The Tommies were last seasons national runner-up as the Pointers played their second highly-ranked opponent to open the season after playing seventh-ranked UW-Superior last week.

Sophomore goaltender Bryn Davies made 30 saves and the Pointers got goals from a sophomore and two freshmen in the victory.

Defenseman Colin Trulock scored the games first goal 3:29 into the contest before the Tommies evened the game on a score by Kevin Rollwagen at the 10:31 mark of the period. Nate Sorenson and Russel Law assisted Trulocks goal.

Brett Beckfeld scored at the 8:10 mark of the second period with assists from Chris Gehrke and Rolf Ulvin before Sean Fish added a goal 6:44 into the third period with assists from Trulock and Sorenson to put the Pointers up 3-1. Rollwagen scored again with 5:03 left, but the Pointers held off the Tommies to secure the victory.

Sorensons two assists match his season total from last year, while Trulock already has matched his season point total from a year ago with four points in the first two games.

The Pointers fired 30 shots on goal and were three-for-eight on the power play, while killing all four of the Tommies penalties.

UW-Stevens Point hosts St. Marys on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Willett Arena.
