Law's Hat Trick Rallies Pointers in Tie With Saints

Box Score

Trailing by two goals midway through the second period, Russel Law took the game into his own hands to rally the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team to a 3-3 tie Friday night against St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.

The freshman recorded the first hat trick by any Pointers player this season to put UW-Stevens Point ahead briefly in the third period before the ninth-ranked Saints forced the tie with a goal with 3:28 remaining

Law scored in even strength, shorthanded and power play situations for the Pointers, who extended their unbeaten streak over the Saints to 43 straight games with a 40-0-3 record in the series since 1987. Sean Fish had assists on two of the goals as UW-Stevens Point is now 10-7-3 overall and 4-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, while St. Scholastica is 13-7-1 overall and also 4-4-1 in the NCHA.

The Pointers spotted the Saints two early goals in the first period, but sophomore goaltender Bryn Davies was nearly flawless the rest of the night, making a career-high 39 saves in his fifth start of the season.

Law scored midway through the second period and then tallied a shorthanded goal later in the period, giving the Pointers a national-best 10 shorthanded goals for the season.

Penalties filled the third period with each team failing to score on over one minute of a five-on-three power play early in the frame. UW-Stevens Point had another five-on-three opportunity later in the period and Law converted on a scramble in front of the net to put the Pointers ahead. However, the lead lasted less than three minutes before the Saints picked up a power play goal to tie the game. St. Scholastica had a power play for the final two minutes of regulation that the Pointers were able to kill off to force overtime.

UW-Stevens Point plays the second game of its five-game road swing on Saturday at UW-Superior.
