Another Shorthanded
Goal Leads to Pointers' Win
Box Score
Theres something about being down a man that seemed
to bring out the best in the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team this weekend.
For the second straight night, the Pointers scored a
key shorthanded goal to spark a victory in a 3-2 win over St. Scholastica at
Willett Arena on Saturday.
This time it was Russel Law getting the score to break
a 1-1 tie with 7:50 remaining in the game. UW-Stevens Point added an insurance
goal shortly after and St. Scholastica scored a goal in the closing minute for
the final margin. On Friday, the Pointers scored three shorthanded goals,
including an overtime goal from Nick Zebro to beat UW-Superior.
For the weekend, the Pointers killed off all 16
opponent power plays and scored four shorthanded goals. More importantly,
UW-Stevens Point picked up two victories to move back into the Northern
Collegiate Hockey Association title chase. The Pointers are now 6-5 overall and
3-3 in the league. UW-Stevens Point also improved 5-1 in one-goal games this
season.
Saturdays game was scoreless until each team scored
goals in the final two minutes of the second period. Brett Beckfeld scored the
games first goal for the Pointers, but Dustin Sieben countered for the Saints
just 22 seconds later to even the game before Law broke the tie. Laws goal came
11 seconds into the penalty as Sean Fish won the faceoff to Rolf Ulvin, who
passed to Law for a backhanded goal on a breakaway.
Taylor Guay provided the cushion for the Pointers
after diving to tip in a loose puck following a rebound of a shot by Zebro with
3:43 left in the game. St. Scholastica got a shorthanded goal of its own from
Matt Saler with 32 seconds left and then pulled the goalie for the final 20
seconds, but never mustered another scoring threat.
The Saints held a 27-25 advantage in shots as Marcus
Paulson made 25 saves for the Pointers and Steve Bounds stopped 22 shots for St.
Scholastica. The Pointers extended their unbeaten streak over the Saints to 42
games as they are now 40-0-2 in the series since 1987. |
