Four-Goal Period Carries Pointers Past Blue Devils

Box Score

A four-goal outburst in the second period was all the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team needed to extend its unbeaten streak to four games with a 4-2 victory over UW-Stout on Friday in Menomonie.

After a scoreless first period, the Blue Devils Mike Kautz scored just six seconds into the second period. However, UW-Stevens Point rallied 30 seconds later with a goal from Rolf Ulvin and a shorthanded goal from Matt Stendahl just 37 seconds later for a 2-1 lead. The Pointers added a pair of goals in the final eight minutes of the period as Sean Fish scored and Ulvin tallied a power play goal.

Stendahls shorthanded goal marked the Pointers ninth of the year as they continue to hold the Division III lead. Ulvin had his first two-goal game of his career, while Fish and Jernberg assisted both of his goals.

UW-Stout, which entered the game ranked 15th in the NCAA Division III and tied atop the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings, scored a goal midway through the third period, but Marcus Paulson finished with 26 saves on his 21st birthday to record the victory.

UW-Stevens Point, which outshot the Blue Devils 37-28, is now 10-6-2 overall and 4-3 in the NCHA, improving to 6-1-2 over its last nine games. The Pointers face another ranked opponent on Saturday when sixth-ranked UW-River Falls brings a seven-game winning streak into Willett Arena at 7:30 p.m.
