Early Deficit Too Much
for Pointers in Defeat
Box Score
For the second straight night an early deficit was too
much to overcome for the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team as the Pointers lost
to UW-Stout 5-2 on Saturday at Willett Arena.
Like Fridays 3-1 defeat at UW-River Falls, the
Pointers outshot their opponent, but trailed 3-0 in the second period and could
not muster a comeback. UW-Stevens Point fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
It marked UW-Stouts largest margin of victory over
the Pointers since UW-Stevens Points first season of varsity hockey in 1981-82.
It was the Pointers first defeat to an unranked team among their four losses
this year.
UW-Stout jumped out early with a goal 14 seconds into
the game as Andrew Stearns fired a shot to the right of Bryn Davies for a 1-0
lead. The advantage stood until the Blue Devils scored two strange goals just 30
seconds apart. The first was a power play goal from Matt Mlynarczyk that
deflected off a defender in front of the goal. The second was a shot from the
blueline from Scott Sikkink that was headed wide, but deflected off the glove of
Davies and into the net. Jeff Wheeler added another goal for UW-Stout with 2:17
left in the second period.
The Pointers outshot the Blue Devils 16-5 in the
third period and began their comeback attempt with a shorthanded goal from Matt
Stendahl at the 6:56 mark. However, UW-Stout answered just over a minute later
with a four-on-four goal from Andy Wiesner. Sean Fish pulled the Pointers within
5-2 on a goal with 2:42 left.
UW-Stout goalie Mike Stone finished with 39 saves as
the Pointers held a 41-24 advantage in shots. |
