Pointers Roll to
Victory Over St. Olaf
Box Score
A quick strike offense and another
solid penalty killing effort were the perfect combination for the UW-Stevens
Point men's hockey team in a 5-1 victory over St. Olaf Saturday at Willett
Arena.
The Pointers scored two goals
immediately following center ice faceoffs and held St. Olaf to one-for-11 on
power play opportunities in posting the victory. It was a rare easy win for
UW-Stevens Point, which is now 9-6-1 overall and had won six of its nine games
by one goal.
UW-Stevens Point opened the
scoring with two goals in the first 10 minutes from Tom Vernelli and Chris
Gehrke to take a 2-0 lead after one period, snapping a string of seven straight
games that were tied after the opening period.
St. Olaf scored a power play goal
in the second period, but the Pointers regained the two-goal cushion just 18
seconds later when Brett Coburn found the back of the net. The Pointers went up
4-1 with 18 seconds left in the period as Rolf Ulvin scored just as the first of
two St. Olaf penalties came off the scoreboard. Ulvin won the ensuing faceoff
and Nick Zebro scored again for the Pointers just nine seconds later for a 5-1
advantage.
The Oles had six power plays in
the second period and three more in the third, but converted just once against a
Pointers' penalty kill that ranks sixth in Division III. The Pointers outshot
the Oles 35-33 as Bryn Davies made 32 saves in his first start since Nov. 19.
Dan Kehler made 30 saves for St.
Olaf, which fell to 4-6-4 overall.
