Pointers in Second Period
Box Score
After handing St. Norbert its most recent defeat and
then scoring just the second goal the Green Knights have allowed in their last
seven games, the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team hassled the nations
second-ranked team before the Green Knights eventually battered the Pointers for
a 6-1 victory on Saturday.
The game was played at the Resch Center in Green Bay
as part of a doubleheader with the Green Bay Gamblers. It was likely the largest
crowd ever to see a UW-Stevens Point hockey game, though exact attendance
figures were not available.
St. Norberts Andy Cote had four goals in the victory,
including the games first score with 4:04 left in the first period. Each team
had seven shots on goal in the first period and the Pointers got on the
scoreboard with a nifty goal from Brett Beckfeld that was assisted by Matt
Stendahl and Colin Trulock just 1:31 into the second period.
However, St. Norbert took over from that point. The
Green Knights held a 16-3 advantage in shots in the period and took the lead
4:16 into the period on a goal from Connor Hughes. Cote scored with 2:04 left in
the period and again just 35 seconds into the third period for a 4-1 lead.
Another Cote goal came at the 3:26 mark of the third period and then Steven
Sleep finished the scoring midway through the final frame. Jeremy Mitchell
assisted three of Cotes goals.
The Green Knights held a 33-17 advantage in shots as
Bryn Davies made 27 saves for the Pointers and Kyle Jones stopped 16 shots for
the Green Knights, who are 12-0-1 since a 2-1 loss at UW-Stevens Point on Nov.
25.
St. Norbert inched closer to its fifth straight
regular season Northern Collegiate Hockey Association title and is now 19-2-2
overall and 9-1-2 in the league. UW-Stevens Point is 11-9-3 overall and 5-6-1 in
the NCHA. |
