Big Second Period Helps Pointers Bury St. Mary's

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point scored seven goals in the second period and had eight different players score in a 10-1 rout of St. Mary's on Saturday at Willett Arena.

It was the Pointers' most goals and biggest victory margin since a 10-0 win at St. Scholastica on Nov. 30, 2001. For the season, the Pointers have now scored 16 goals in three games by 13 different players.

UW-Stevens Point opened up a 2-0 lead on goals by Brett Coburn and Brett Beckfeld, who teamed on a line with Matt Stendahl that provided six of the Pointers' goals. St. Mary's got its lone score from Adam Gill with 45 seconds left in the first period before the Pointers' second period onslaught.

Stendahl scored the first of the deluge at the 2:02 mark before James Jernberg and Nick Zebro tallied goals 13 seconds apart. Coburn scored another goal just 1:36 later and Anthony Forgione, Stendahl and Rolf Ulvin finished off the period to give the Pointers a 9-1 cushion.

Jordan Blair scored off assists from Stendahl and Beckfeld just 1:41 into the third period to complete the scoring for the Pointers. Stendahl totaled two goals and three assists for the night, while Coburn had two goals and an assist and Beckfeld had a goal with two assists. Marcus Paulson finished with 27 saves as the Pointers had a 49-28 advantage in shots for the game.
