Pointers Battle Another Ranked Foe to the Wire

Box Score

Having already defeated three teams ranked in the top six of the NCAA Division III season, the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team battled another down to the wire on Saturday, but came up short in a 4-1 loss to fifth-ranked St. Johns in Collegeville, Minn.

The Johnnies scored three times in the final period, including an empty net goal, to pull out the victory and improve to 10-2-1. The loss snapped the Pointers four-game unbeaten streak as they fell to 7-6-1. UW-Stevens Point had earlier defeated St. Norbert and St. Thomas when each was ranked third in the country and sixth-ranked UW-Superior.

St. Johns opened the game with a goal 5:03 into the first period by Tom Freeman. Colin Trulock answered late in the period for the Pointers with a goal assisted by Taylor Guay and Nick Zebro.

UW-Stevens Point controlled much of the second period, holding a 15-8 advantage in shots, but Johnnies goaltender Adam Hanna, who ranks third in the country in save percentage, stopped all 15 shots in the period. Pointers goaltender Marcus Paulson also had a solid night with 27 saves for the game. Hanna finished the night with 22 saves.

St. Johns broke the tie at the 7:17 mark of the final period on a goal from Blake Williams. Nick Levar put the Johnnies ahead 3-1 at the 14:58 mark and Bille Luger added an empty net goal. St. Johns outshot the Pointers 14-7 in the final period and 31-29 for the game.

UW-Stevens Point will host Augsburg on Tuesday at Willett Arena at 7:30 p.m.
