Pointers Battle
Another Ranked Foe to the Wire

Having already defeated three teams ranked in the top
six of the NCAA Division III season, the UW-Stevens Point men�s hockey team
battled another down to the wire on Saturday, but came up short in a 4-1 loss to
fifth-ranked St. John�s in Collegeville, Minn.
The Johnnies scored three times in the final period,
including an empty net goal, to pull out the victory and improve to 10-2-1. The
loss snapped the Pointers� four-game unbeaten streak as they fell to 7-6-1.
UW-Stevens Point had earlier defeated St. Norbert and St. Thomas when each was
ranked third in the country and sixth-ranked UW-Superior.
St. John�s opened the game with a goal 5:03 into the
first period by Tom Freeman. Colin Trulock answered late in the period for the
Pointers with a goal assisted by Taylor Guay and Nick Zebro.
UW-Stevens Point controlled much of the second period,
holding a 15-8 advantage in shots, but Johnnies� goaltender Adam Hanna, who
ranks third in the country in save percentage, stopped all 15 shots in the
period. Pointers� goaltender Marcus Paulson also had a solid night with 27 saves
for the game. Hanna finished the night with 22 saves.
St. John�s broke the tie at the 7:17 mark of the final
period on a goal from Blake Williams. Nick Levar put the Johnnies ahead 3-1 at
the 14:58 mark and Bille Luger added an empty net goal. St. John�s outshot the
Pointers 14-7 in the final period and 31-29 for the game.
UW-Stevens Point will host Augsburg on Tuesday at
Willett Arena at 7:30 p.m. |
