Pointers Drop Game One of NCHA Quarterfinals

Box Score

A three goal lead for Lake Forest was too much for the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to overcome Friday night as the Pointers fell 5-2 to the Foresters in game one of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association tournament quarterfinals in Lake Forest, Ill.

Brian Lee gave Lake Forest an early lead as he scored at the 4:57 mark of the first period on an assist from Tyler Canal. Canal extended the lead as he scored on an assist from Mike Kneeland at the 12:17 mark to give the Foresters a two-goal cushion at the end of the first period.

Bryan Lafevor scored the eventual game winner when he put the Foresters up 3-0 at the 9:39 mark of the second period. Graham Melbourne was credited with the assist on the goal.

Matt Stendahl put the Pointers on the board when he scored his fourth shorthanded goal of the season at the 11:49 mark in the period. Freshman Matt Buha drew the Pointers within a goal as he lit the lamp knocking home a loose puck in front of the net with 3:14 remaining in the second period.

The Pointers threatened to tie the game at three, but Foresters goalie Brandon Kohuch was able to get his stick on a Sean Fish shot to keep the Foresters lead intact.  Kohuch had 40 saves on the evening after posting 43 and 47 saves in games against the Pointers earlier this season.

Lee scored to put Lake Forest up 4-2 with 9:30 remaining in the game on assists from Canal and Kneeland on a goal that was reviewed by officials. Greg Ihnken capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal from Chris Wilson to seal the game for the Foresters.

Freshman Marcus Paulson made 20 saves in goal for the Pointers (12-10-4 overall).  The Foresters improved to (14-12-0 overall) on the season.  Game two of the series is Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
