Home Playoff Series With Win

UW-Stevens Point closed in on a home Northern
Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series for the second straight year with a
4-2 win over UW-Eau Claire on Friday in Eau Claire.
The Pointers moved into a tie for fourth place in the
league with the victory and can clinch a home quarterfinal series with a victory
over the Blugolds in the final regular season game on Saturday at Willett Arena.
The game was tied 2-2 in the final period before
Russel Law posted his second goal of the evening, and team-leading 12th of the
season, when he knocked home the game-winner with eight minutes remaining in the
third period. Sean Fish and Rolf Ulvin recorded assists on the goal.
Brett Beckfeld sealed the win recorded his sixth goal
of the season as he scored an empty net goal from Mark Peters and Anthony
Forgione with four seconds remaining.
The Pointers scored first for just the second time in
13 NCHA games this season as Shane Foster scored his fourth goal of the year
1:33 into the second period. Taylor Guay and Andy Cankar assisted on the goal.
UW-Eau Claire tied the game with a power play goal by
Chip Dunleavy from Evan Byers and Kyle Garner at the 9:36 mark of the second
period. The Blugolds scored again just 1:02 later as Jeremiah Weber scored on a
pass from Kevin Knapp to take a 2-1 lead.
Law tied the game for the Pointers when he scored at
the 17:59 mark of the second period. Fish and Ulvin once again added assists on
the play.
The Pointers outshot the Blugolds 33-21 for the game
as freshman goaltender Marcus Paulson made 19 saves to post his 10th victory of
the season. Steffan Braunlich made 29 saves for UW-Eau Claire. |
