Late Scoring Flurry
Keys Pointers Past Augsburg
Box Score
It took UW-Stevens Point and
Augsburg some time to get started, but the two teams finally put together plenty
of offense late in the game with the Pointers eventually prevailing for a 4-3
men's hockey victory Tuesday at Willett Arena.
All seven goals in the game were
scored in a span of less than 11 minutes as the team skated scoreless until
UW-Stevens Point's Nick Zebro scored with 1:18 left in the second period. Taylor
Guay and Brett Coburn assisted the goal, which extended Zebro's scoring streak
to seven games. The goal seemed to open the floodgates for more scoring as
Augsburg's Danny Carlson evened the game just 30 seconds later.
UW-Stevens Point took a two-goal
advantage early in the third period as Matt Stendahl picked off an Auggies'
errant pass and raced to a breakaway goal. Nate Sorenson followed with a wrister
through the pads of Auggies' goalie David Nash for a 3-1 advantage.
Augsburg rallied with an
unassisted goal from Kyle Thompson, but the Pointers regained the two-goal lead
a minute later when Russel Law scored off assists from Rolf Ulvin and Sean Fish.
The Auggies got a goal from
Critter Nagurski, who launched a long shot from the blueline on a five-on-three
power play to pull within 4-3 with 10:20 left, but the Pointers' defense and
goalie Marcus Paulson posted a shutout over the remaining time to earn the win.
Paulson finished the night with 21 saves.
UW-Stevens Point outshot the
Auggies 44-24 as Nash stopped 40 shots for Augsburg in his first start of the
season. The Pointers improved to 8-6-1, while Augsburg fell to 5-5-3.
