Pointers Burned by Unbeaten St. John's

Central Wisconsin Sunday
Original Article

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - For the second straight day the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's hockey team had the challenge of playing an unbeaten team.

The news wasn't quite as good Saturday after St. John's (Minn.) University dealt the Pointers a 3-1 non-conference loss at the National Hockey Center.

The setback comes on the heels of a 3-3 tie with UW-Superior on Friday night.

After a scoreless opening period, the Johnnies (12-0-1) jumped on top with a pair of goals in the middle period.

Ian Ross opened the scoring at 2:12 of the second period, beating UWSP goalie Bryn Davies (31 saves) off an assist from Darryl Smoleroff.

A season-long bug-a-boo then jumped up and bit the Pointers again as Bille Luger found the back of the net with 16 seconds remaining in the frame.

UWSP (7-5-3) has been victimized by opposing goals in the final minute of the period at least six times this season.

The momentum swing was too tough to get back in its favor, though UWSP did its best to turn things around.

Wausau West product Jordan Blair got the Pointers on the scoreboard 2:53 into the final period to trim the deficit to 2-1. Ryan Kirchhoff and Mike Brolsma assisted on the goal.

But Luger had the answer less than 5 minutes later with his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

St. John's left the rest up to goalie Adam Hanna, who made 29 saves.

The Pointers return to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend with games at Superior and St. Scholastica.
