RIVER FALLS -The University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's hockey team had third place in the Northern
Collegiate Hockey Association in its sights Friday night.
That was when UW-River Falls decided it wasn't about to give its standing up.
The Falcons scored three unanswered goals in the third period and Jesse Modahl
and Jamie Steinert each scored twice to deny the Pointers 5-2 in NCHA action at
Hunt Arena.
The win locked up the No. 3 seed for River Falls in next weekend's NCHA
quarterfinals.
UWSP (11-10-3, 6-6-1 NCHA) currently sits in fourth. A win over Stout tonight
would clinch home-ice for a two-game quarterfinal series with Lake Forest
College.
Ryan Kirchhoff gave the Pointers reason for optimism after he scored on the
power play with 4:56 elapsed in the second period to tie the game at 2-all.
The goal stole some of the momentum away from the Falcons (15-7-2, 8-5-0 NCHA),
who scored back-to-back goals in the opening period to erase a 1-0 deficit
courtesy of goal by UWSP freshman Anthony Forgione.
Modahl gave River Falls the lead for good just 1 minute into the final period,
before Jamie Steinert sealed the Pointers' fate with consecutive power-play
goals in a span of 32 seconds late in the frame.
