Brolsma and Kostichka Named First-Team All-NCHA and All-WIAC

UW-Stevens Points top two scorers were among the seven forwards named to the All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mens hockey team.

Senior forwards Mike Brolsma and Adam Kostichka both earned first-team All-NCHA honors, while sophomore defenseman Chris Gehrke was an honorable mention performer. All three were also named to the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team, while senior forward Ryan Kirchhoff was an honorable mention All-WIAC selection.

UW-Stevens Point ranked second in the NCHA in scoring offense and finished 12-12-3 overall this past season.

Brolsma, who attended Appleton North High School, led the NCHA in scoring with 27 points and 18 assists in league games. He finished the season with 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points overall and totaled 128 career points, which ranks 12th in school history. He was also a first-team All-NCHA selection as a freshman in 2001-02.

Kostichka, a Stevens Point native, led the Pointers with 15 goals and ranked second in the NCHA with 11 goals in league games. He also had 13 assists to finish with 28 points and closed his career with 94 points. It was his first All-NCHA selection.

Gehrke, an Edina, Minn. native, was the teams top-scoring defenseman with four goals and 13 assists for 17 points. A physical presence on the blue line, Gehrke led the team with 43 penalties and 129 penalty minutes and was a key member of the teams power play and penalty killing units.

Kirchhoff, a Fairway, Kan. native, enjoyed the best year of his four-year career with nine goals and 20 assists for 29 points. He finished the year strong with 16 points over the final 11 games of the season, including five points in a key late-season win over UW-Superior.

Kostichka was also among four Pointer players named to the NCHA All-Academic team. He was named to the squad for the second straight year along with junior Jordan Blair, a Wausau native. Sophomores Brett Coburn, an Addison, Ill. native, and Nick Zebro, a Mosinee native, were both named to the team for the first time.

UW-Superior forward Mike Wiggins was the NCHA Player of the Year and St. Norberts Tim Coghlin was the Coach of the Year. Steve Freeman of UW-River Falls was the WIAC Coach of the Year.
