STEVENS POINT - Sometimes timing is everything.

Goals have been tough to come by in recent weeks for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's hockey team.

St. Norbert College went into its Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game against UWSP ranked fourth in Division III with a 1.88 goals against average.

Chancy Colquhoun recorded 23 saves, and second-ranked St. Norbert steamrolled the Pointers 9-0 at K.B. Willett Arena on Saturday night.

The shutout was the first in 66 games for the Pointers, who suffered their worst whitewashing since a 9-0 loss to River Falls in 1985.

"One goal any time in that game and things could've been different," UWSP coach Joe Baldarotta said. "It doesn't matter if you lose 1-0 or 9-0."
Colquhoun made sure there would be no need to worry about the red light burning out on his end of the rink.

The senior netminder from Ottawa, Ontario, was at his best in the second period, making 10 of his 23 saves.

Jeremy Mitchell and Jason Deitsch had given the Green Knights (17-1-1, 7-1 NCHA) a 2-0 lead after one period - the second goal coming with only 50 seconds left.
"Chancy came up big and made some nice saves," Baldarotta said.

With scoring chances at a minimum, the Pointers (11-5-2, 4-3-1 NCHA) figured to have its best chance to score on the power play.

St. Norbert refused to give an inch, maintaining control of the puck and routinely killing off all five UWSP power plays.

Meanwhile, the Green Knights caught a break when a potential icing was canceled by Pointer goalie Ted Eastman, and Andy Trann capitalized for a 3-0 lead.

"It was like we were chasing the puck all over the place on the power play. You've got to have the puck on your stick, and we didn't have it much," Baldarotta said.

"When it's 3-0 we had to score. They got a couple bounces, and then one thing lead to another."
Eastman became the sacrificial lamb in the third period as the Green Knights unleashed a six-goal barrage.

In an effort to generate some offense, the Pointer defenensemen jumped up in the play.

That left plenty of open ice, and St. Norbert turned into a shark tasting blood. Deitsch and Troy Boisjoli each scored a pair of goals, while Andrew Derton finished with three assists.

"These are tough. We've got to shake this off and go back to work," Baldarotta said.

The Pointers won't have much time to lick their wounds.

Next up on the schedule is a rematch with the Green Knights on Friday in De Pere.
