UW-Stevens Points Teresa Stanley placed second overall and Jenna Mitchler was third, but UW-La Crosse placed five of the top 12 runners to edge the two-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens cross country champions at Saturdays conference meet in Superior.

Meanwhile, the Pointer mens team placed fifth of nine teams, marking only the second time since 1980 that the Pointers have not finished among the top four squads.

Stanley led the womens team with a time of 21:57 to finish 17 seconds behind UW-La Crosses Julia Rudd on the six-kilometer course. Mitchler finished in 22:01 and Ashleigh Potuznik was 13th overall in 23:18. Hannah Dieringer was 18th overall in 23:40 and finished one second ahead of 19th place Tami Scott. The Pointers totaled 55 points to finish 17 points behind the Eagles after winning the title the past two years. UW-Oshkosh was third with 105 points.

Travis Nechuta was 12th overall to lead the mens team. Nechuta was the highest-finishing freshman at the meet and among three Pointer freshmen in the teams top five finishers, posting a time of 25:52. Another freshman, Dominick Meyer, was 14th for the Pointers in 25:58 and Josh Kujawa was 23rd in 26:21. Joe Rodriguez was 38th in 26:52 and freshman Cory Towle was one second behind to place 39th.

UW-Stevens Point totaled 112 team points. UW-La Crosse had 25 points and easily won the meet by 53 points over second place UW-Oshkosh.

Both teams will compete in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill. on Nov. 12.
