UW-Stevens Point will send both its men�s
and women�s cross country teams to the NCAA Division III championships
next weekend after both teams qualified at Saturday�s Midwest Regional
in Colfax.
The Pointer women won the team title to
remain undefeated this season against Division III opponents and
clinch its 12th trip to nationals, including its fourth in the last
five years. The men�s team finished third at the regional to advance
to the national meet for the third straight year and 17th time
overall. It is the eighth time UW-Stevens Point has qualified its
men�s and women�s teams in the same year. The national meet takes
place on Sat., Nov. 22 in Hanover, Ind.
Teresa Stanley led the women�s team with an
eighth place finish in 22:28. Leah Herlache posted a time of 22:35 to
place 10th overall. Jenna Mitchler was 14th in 22:45 and Ashleigh
Potuznik was 19th in 22:59. The Pointers had 76 team points to easily
outdistance second place UW-Oshkosh, which had 98 points.
Curt Johnson paced the men�s squad by
finishing fourth in 24:48. Mark LaLonde was 19th in 25:17, while James
Levash was 23rd in 25:21 and Andy Bednarek was 24th in 25:27. Adam
Bucholz finished out a balanced attack by placing 28th in 25:38.
The Pointer men�s team placed third with 98
points, which was one point behind second place North Central (Ill.).
UW-Oshkosh won the meet with 35 points. |
