Since 1986, UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse have
enjoyed a stranglehold on the WIAC womens cross country championship.
That changed on Saturday, when the UW-Stevens Point womens cross
country squad claimed its first ever WIAC Championship at the
Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax. The Pointers placed five runners
among the top eight finishers to blow away the field with 26 points.
UW-Oshkosh was second with 52 points, followed by UW-La Crosse with
86. The 26 points by UW-Stevens Point were the best in conference
history since UW-Oshkosh scored 19 during the 1996 conference meet.
Sophomore Jenna Mitchler, who had not been the
Pointers top finisher in any meet this year, led the Pointers with a
third place finish. She covered the 6,000 meter course in 22:10. Close
on her heels were a trio of Pointers, led by junior Megan Craig who
placed fourth in 22:13. Juniors Leah Herlache and Teresa Stanley ended
up in the next two positions, stopping the clock in 22:21 and 22:30,
respectively. Liz Woodworth of UW-Oshkosh was the individual
conference champion, winning with a time of 21:05.
Also, UW-Stevens Point
coach Len Hill was named the conference's Coach of the Year for the
fourth time in his career.
In the mens race, the Pointers ran to a second
place finish behind defending national champion UW-Oshkosh. The
Pointers had three runners finish in the top 10 and finished with 48
points, but could not overcome the Titans who won the meet with
28 points.
Senior Curt Johnson was the Pointers top
finisher placing third in a time of 24:52. He trailed individual
champion Ryan Kleimenhagen of UW-Platteville by just 10 seconds.
Junior Mark LaLonde and sophomore Adam Buchholz earned second team
All-WIAC honors by placing eighth and ninth respectively. LaLonde
covered the course in 25:13, edging Bucholz who ran a 25:19. Junior
Andy Bednarek placed 13th in a time of 25:24.
Both Pointer teams will return to Whitetail Golf
Course in Colfax in two weeks for the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Meet on
November 15th. |
