Perkins Ties School Record to Keep Pointers Alive

Josh Perkins tied a school record with 15 strikeouts against UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament in Wisconsin Rapids as UW-Stevens Point avoided elimination with a 3-0 victory.

Perkins had strikeouts in every inning against the Titans as he tied the school mark set by Mike Thrun on May 2 at Marian. Perkins' previous career-high in strikeouts was 10, also against UW-Oshkosh on April 29. The senior righthander improved to 5-2 on the season as he allowed only five hits and four walks in the complete game shutout. Perkins didn't allow a hit after the fourth inning.

UW-Stevens Point scored all three of its runs in the third inning as Nat Richter's RBI single scored Brandon Scheidler for the first run of the game. Ryan Byrnes added an RBI double and Adam Evanoff's RBI single scored Byrnes to give the Pointers all of the offense they would need behind Perkins.

UW-Oshkosh threatened to get on the board in the fourth inning when Josh Shere singled to lead off the inning. Shere advanced to second on a balk and tried to score on a single to right by Brad Demmin, but Scheidler threw him out at the plate to keep the shutout in place.

Seven Pointers had hits in the game as UW-Stevens Point will play the loser of UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.

In the first game of the day, UW-Stevens Point suffered a heartbreaking loss to UW-Whitewater as the Warhawks scored four runs in the ninth inning to win 5-4.

UW-Whitewater scored on a solo home run to open the inning and plated three more runs, all after two outs, on one hit, two walks, a hit batter and two errors to finish the game. The tying run scored on a two-out, bases loaded catcher's interference call and the winning run came home on an error on the following play.

Byrnes got the Pointers on the board in the first inning with an RBI single scoring Richter. UW-Stevens Point added to their lead in the seventh inning, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single by Jake Frombach and scoring on an error by the Warhawks' shortstop.

UW-Whitewater scored in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single by Matt Schliewe to tighten the score at 3-1. Byrnes hit a two-out home run to give the Pointers a three-run lead going to the bottom of the ninth.

Jordan Zimmermann pitched eight and two-third innings allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with nine strikeouts. Travis Kempf took the loss for the Pointers allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk.
