Pointers Take Pair
From 18th-Ranked Ripon
Ryan Byrnes finished six-for-seven for the day and
the UW-Stevens Point baseball team had a pair of quality pitching
performances to sweep 18th-ranked Ripon by scores of 4-1 and 11-6 on Tuesday
in Ripon.
Mike Thrun allowed just one run over eight innings
for the win in the opener, while Tyler Lorenz held the Red Hawks to three
runs in six innings in the second game as the Pointers ran their record to
20-10 overall. Ripon had a 17-game winning streak snapped in the opener and
fell to 21-5 overall.
Thrun, a sophomore lefthander, was making his
second career start and had never thrown more than four and one-third
innings in a game. He scattered six hits and took a shutout into the ninth
before Eric Schwendiman led off the inning with a home run. Jeff Zielke
retired the final three batters with two strikeouts for his third save.
Lorenz allowed just five hits over six innings in
the second game and gave way to Jeff Sadlemyer and Garret Nix, who finished
up in relief.
The Pointers pounded out 26 hits in the
doubleheader and jumped out to 4-0 leads after three innings in each game.
UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in the first inning of the first game as
Byrnes and Doug Coe each had run-scoring singles and Adam Evanoff had a
sacrifice fly.
Byrnes finished two-for-three in the opener and
went four-for-four in the second game. Coe also had a big day, going
two-for-four in the first game and three-for-four in the nightcap with two
RBI�s in each game.
The Pointers had 16 hits in the second game and
jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the seventh inning.
Stewart Larsen
was three-for-five with two doubles as the Pointers connected on eight
extra-base hits, including a double in six consecutive innings. Tim Schlosser hit a solo homer and Chuck Brehm was
two-for-three with a triple in the second game, but had a 17-game hitting
streak snapped in the opener.
UW-Stevens Point has now won 10 of its last 12
games and plays conference doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at
UW-Oshkosh at noon each day. |
