Pointers Suffer
Two One-Run Setbacks to Titans
Close games have gone against the UW-Stevens Point
baseball team all season and Saturday was no exception as the Pointers
dropped two more one-run games at the hands of UW-Oshkosh.
The Titans had just two hits in a 2-1 opening game
win and then drew three straight walks in the bottom of the 11th inning to
pull out a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. UW-Stevens Point is now 20-12
overall and 10-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,
including a 1-7 record in one-run games. UW-Oshkosh improved to 21-11
overall and 12-6 in the WIAC.
Pointers sophomore Jordan Zimmermann was a tough
luck loser in the first game, taking a no-hitter until two outs in the sixth
inning before allowing a single to Andrew Stendahl. Mickey Fadness followed
with a two-run homer into the wind to right field for the Titans only runs.
Zimmermann had six strikeouts and allowed one walk in the complete game
loss.
UW-Stevens Point, meanwhile, had eight hits
against Titans ace Jim Ziegler and nine for the game. The Pointers scored
their run on Chuck Brehms run-scoring double in the third. Adam Evanoff was
three-for-four in the loss.
Fadness also had the big hit in the second game
with a one-out double in the bottom of the 11th inning. After an intentional
walk to Josh Shere, Brad Demmin and Brock Wetenkamp drew consecutive walks
to drive in the winning run. UW-Stevens Point left a runner at third base in
the top of the 11th after working out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the
bottom of the 10th.
After UW-Oshkosh scored in the third inning,
UW-Stevens Point added a pair of runs in the fourth on a run-scoring double
by Doug Coe and sacrifice fly by Tim Schlosser. Stewart Larsen scored on an
error following a double by Brehm in the fifth for a 3-1 lead. UW-Oshkosh
tied the game when Bryan Schwebke hit a run-scoring double in the sixth and
Demmin added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Both teams had plenty of baserunners in the second
game, but UW-Oshkosh hit into four double plays and UW-Stevens Point had
three runners picked off first base and a failed suicide squeeze attempt in
the fifth. The Titans left 15 runners on base and UW-Stevens Point left 12
runners on base.
Adam Roos earned the win, allowing one hit in
three innings of relief. Jeff Zielke took the loss for the Pointers in
relief of Josh Perkins, who struck out a career-high 10 batters in seven
innings. The Pointers walked 10 batters in the loss.
The teams are scheduled to meet again on Sunday at
noon in Oshkosh. |
