Thrun Fans 15 as Pointers Win Big at Marian

Sophomore Mike Thrun set a school record Tuesday night with 15 strikeouts as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team defeated Marian 14-1 in Fond du Lac.

Thrun, whose previous career-high in strikeouts was four, had strikeouts in every inning and recorded 10 strikeouts through the first five frames. Thrun entered the game with eight strikeouts all season and 18 for his career.

Thrun broke the previous record of strikeouts in a game of 14, held by Jordan Zimmermann and Bill Kuse. Kuse had 14 strikeouts against UW-Milwaukee in 1961 and Zimmermann matched the mark on April 1 against UW-Platteville. Thrun struck out the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the eighth to set the record and Tyler Lorenz got a strikeout of his own as he pitched the final two-thirds of an inning. Thrun, who was last week's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the week, allowed only four hits and one earned run as he improved to 3-1 for the season.

UW-Stevens Point didn't waste any time taking the early lead, jumping on top of the Sabres with five runs in the first inning. Zimmermann highlighted the big inning with a three-run double and then added a two-run homer in the fifth while finishing three-for-five with a pair of doubles and five RBI's.

After Marian got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Rob Gudates, Ryan Byrnes added a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh. UW-Stevens Point used another five run inning in the eighth to put the 10-run rule into effect.

The Pointers improved to 21-14 overall with the victory. UW-Stevens Point hosts UW-Superior this weekend in the final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games of the season. Doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Friday and Noon on Saturday.
