Pointers Slug 10
Home Runs to Sweep Lakeland
With the wind blowing out at University Field on
Wednesday, UW-Stevens Point took full advantage by slugging 10 home runs in
defeating Lakeland 15-9 and 15-5 in a non-conference baseball doubleheader.
The Pointers hit four home runs in the opening
game and smashed six in the second game with five different players going
deep in the first four innings.
Lakeland had its first seven batters reach base in
the third inning and then its first five reach in the fourth to build a 6-1
lead in the opening game. However, UW-Stevens Point rallied with seven runs
in the bottom of the fourth, capped by a three-run homer by Doug Coe that
put the Pointers ahead 8-6.
A sacrifice fly by Jake Frombach and a solo homer
by Stewart Larsen in the fifth gave the Pointers a 10-6 lead, but Lakeland
rallied on a three-run shot by Adam Brown in the sixth to pull within 10-9.
UW-Stevens Point answered in the bottom of the inning with a grand slam from
Tim Schlosser and then added a solo homer by Chuck Brehm in the seventh to
finish the scoring.
Josh Perkins worked out of a bases loaded jam with
three straight strikeouts in the fourth and allowed only two hits while
striking out eight over the final six innings of work to earn the win.
UW-Stevens Point trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the
second inning in the second game and used another seven-run inning to take
control. Ryan Byrnes and Ben Warwick hit consecutive doubles before
Schlosser and Frombach hit back-to-back homers. One batter later, Brehm
homered again to put the Pointers ahead 7-2.
Byrnes hit a two-run homer in the third and Larsen
hit a solo shot in the fourth as UW-Stevens Point pushed its lead to 11-3.
Lakeland, which scored three of its five runs on sacrifice flies, added
single runs in the fifth and seventh, but Brehm ended the game by the 10-run
rule with a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh.
Mike Thrun earned the win in his first collegiate
start with four and one-third innings pitched. Brandon Hemstead allowed
three hits in relief.
The Pointers are now 12-8 overall and are off
until Monday when they host St. Norbert in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. |
