WIAC Final With Victory
UW-Stevens Point
pounded out 20 hits, including five home runs in downing the nation�s
top-ranked team, UW-Whitewater 15-4 in the WIAC Baseball Tournament in
Wisconsin Rapids.
Jake Frombach led off
the bottom half of the first inning for the Pointers with a solo home run on
the way to a four-for-five performance. He had a double in the fourth inning
and scored three runs. Ryan Jones belted three-run home run in the fourth
inning and tallied a two-run single in the fifth to finish with five runs
batted in. Jones also had a double. Joel Hojnacki drove in three runs with a
home run down the left field line that gave the Pointers a 12-4 lead. Steve
Wiczek opened the seventh with a solo home run, before Nat Richter ended the
game with a two-run shot to right field.
Matt Polomis pitched a
workman-like five and one-third innings for the Pointers to earn his fourth
victory of the season. He scattered nine hits, struck out three and allowed
four earned runs. Kevin Pankow earned the save in relief.
UW-Whitewater was led
by catcher Aaron Guilbault who went two-for-three with a solo home run.
Eddie Adamson added a solo home run, while Eric Baldwin chipped in two hits
as well. Warhawk ace Kevin Tomasiewicz was saddled with his first loss in 14
decisions. The game was Tomasiewicz�s first setback since a 10-3 loss to the
Pointers on May 2, 2004.
UW-Stevens Point will advance to the tournament championship game and face
the winner of the UW-Whitewater/UW-Platteville game at 7:00 p.m. on
Saturday. The Warhawks will play UW-Platteville in a 4:00 p.m. game to earn
the opportunity for a re-match with the Pointers. |
