Baseball Ranked Ninth in NCAA Division III Poll

Having won 20 of its last 22 games, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team made its appearance in the NCAA Division III rankings in a big way, landing the No. 9 spot in this weeks poll by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

The Pointers were ranked 18th following their 6-1 start, but then dropped out of the rankings before returning this week in the top 10. Polls are released every two weeks.

UW-Stevens Point is now 26-5 overall and will play at Division I Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday before playing a four-game series at UW-Superior over the weekend.

UW-Whitewater is ranked No. 1 in the country and plays at UW-Stevens Point for a four-game series May 6-7 at University Field to end the regular season. The Warhawks also host 16th-ranked UW-Oshkosh in a four-game series this weekend.

Pointers Lead Division III Baseball in Home Run Hitting

Fans of the long ball have to be in love with the UW-Stevens Point baseball team as the Pointers are the first NCAA Division III team to reach 60 home runs, according to a glance of Division III baseball statistics from around the country.

Through 31 games, the Pointers are already closing in on the school record of 67 homers set during 2002. UW-Stevens Point has three of the nations top individual home run hitters in Ryan Jones, who has 13 round-trippers, and Steve Wiczek and Chuck Brehm, who each have 10 homers. In fact, the Pointers have had 14 different players hit home runs. UW-Stevens Point has homered in 28 of its 31 games this year and has hit at least two homers in 21 different games.

As of April 24, East Texas Baptist had 56 home runs in 40 games, while Wooster (Ohio) had 55 homers in 30 games and Johns Hopkins (Md.) had 51 homers in 28 games.
