WHITEWATER - There is something about the top teams in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that brings out the best in the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team.

UWSP nearly pulled off a sweep Sunday against nationally-ranked UW-Whitewater before settling for a split. Earlier, the Pointers split with Oshkosh.

After dropping the opener 4-3, the Pointers (20-11, 12-7 WIAC) rebounded to put a 10-3 hurting on the Warhawks (29-7, 21-3 WIAC).

In the nightcap, Chuck Brehm, Matt Peterson and Matt Polomis each collected a pair of hits, as UWSP pounded a trio of Whitewater pitchers for 11 hits. Matt Peetz and Peterson scored three times.

Aaron Achterberg was the winning pitcher, scattering seven hits while walking two and striking out two over seven innings. Amherst native Matt Mehne worked two scoreless innings in relief.

Whitewater won the opener with pitcher Greg Reinhard (7-1) besting the Pointers' J.C. Reinke (3-3).

UWSP grabbed a 3-0 lead, but the Warhawks responded with four runs in the third, featuring Brady Endl's three-run home run.
