The combination of the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point batting order and the UW-Superior pitching staff
seemed to be a combustible one to say the least.
The Pointers (17-9, 11-5 WIAC) brought some big stricks to the plate on
Sunday, mashing out a total of 38 hits to outscore the Yellowjackets 41-7 in
an easy doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at University Field.
In the first contest, catcher Joe Waksmonski led the UWSP battery by hitting
for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs, including a two-run homer in
the fourth inning. Designated hitter Steve Wiczek added a grand slam in the
nine-run inning. Matt Peetz and Mike Hall added two hits and two RBIs
apiece. J.C. Reinke dominated on the mound, striking out a career-high 11
batters in his first career complete game for the Pointers.
In the second game, UWSP jumped out to a 9-2 lead after the first inning,
powered by a pair of three-run homers by DH Matt Peterson and third baseman
Nat Richter and a two-run double by Peetz. Peterson added a solo home run in
the second, while leftfielder Greg Treml hit a two-run shot in the fourth.
Peterson went 3-for-3 in the contest, Jake Frombach was 4-for-6, Matt Polmis
was 3-for-5, while Treml, Waksmonski, Richter and Chuck Brehm added two hits
apiece. Aaron Achterberg pitched just over six innings, striking out eight
batters, to earn the win for UWSP. |
