Nat Richter made sure the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team won the opener of a doubleheader with
Platteville on Sunday.
Pitcher Aaron Achterberg ensured the Pointers could bring out the broom in
the nightcap.
UWSP swept a doubleheader from the Pioneers 7-4 and 8-0 in Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at University Field.
The sweep left the Pointers at 24-14 overall and 16-8 in the WIAC.
Richter, who went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs, broke a 4-4 tie
with a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning. Matt Peetz and
Joe Waksmonski each followed with RBI doubles to provide some insurance
runs.
Peetz finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Chuck Brehm scored
three times to make a winner of reliever Adam Fox (2-0), who pitched 1 2/3
innings of hitless ball.
Kevin Pankow earned the save with two scoreless innings, striking out a
pair.
Achterberg didn't need any help on the mound, as he tossed eight shutout
innings.
Platteville mounted its only serious threat in the bottom of the second,
loading the bases with no outs, but Achterberg escaped the jam.
The Pointers broke the game open in the sixth inning with. Joel Brieske
opened the inning with a home run and Matt Polomis capped it with a two-run
blast. In between, Matt Peterson contributed a two-run double. |
