Nat Richter made sure the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team won the opener of a doubleheader with Platteville on Sunday.

Pitcher Aaron Achterberg ensured the Pointers could bring out the broom in the nightcap.

UWSP swept a doubleheader from the Pioneers 7-4 and 8-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at University Field.

The sweep left the Pointers at 24-14 overall and 16-8 in the WIAC.

Richter, who went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs, broke a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning. Matt Peetz and Joe Waksmonski each followed with RBI doubles to provide some insurance runs.

Peetz finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Chuck Brehm scored three times to make a winner of reliever Adam Fox (2-0), who pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless ball.

Kevin Pankow earned the save with two scoreless innings, striking out a pair.

Achterberg didn't need any help on the mound, as he tossed eight shutout innings.

Platteville mounted its only serious threat in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with no outs, but Achterberg escaped the jam.

The Pointers broke the game open in the sixth inning with. Joel Brieske opened the inning with a home run and Matt Polomis capped it with a two-run blast. In between, Matt Peterson contributed a two-run double.
