There were a number of records and streaks
broken between the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the University
of Wisconsin-Platteville on Friday, enough so that neither team could claim
an advantage after a pair of games at University Field.
The Pointers rallied late to take a 13-11 victory in a slugfest in the first
contest, but were unable to come up with any of the same magic in the
second, dropping the second half of the twinbill 5-1. With the split, UWSP
is 22-14 overall and 14-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.
First baseman Matt Peetz went 3-for-5 wth two RBIs and three runs scored on
the afternoon, and in the process set the school record for career hits,
surpassing the old mark of 189 set by Randy Reed.
On the other side, Platteville's desginated hitter Ryan Levendoski went
6-for-10 with an RBI and two runs scored to set the school's record for hits
in a season with 60.
UWSP also had a streak of sorts snapped in the
first contest when starting pitcher Shane Standifer allowed the first nine
Platteville batters to reach base on six hits and three walks, scoring seven
runs to break his own consecutive scoreless inning streak at 18.
But with the game tied 9-9 in the sixth inning, UWSP took the lead for good
when third baseman Matt Peterson scored on a balk and centerfielder Chuck
Brehm added an RBI groundout.
Rightfielder Matt Polomis was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored,
leftfielder Greg Treml was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and catcher Joe
Waksmonski was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in the game.
Jeremy Mueller earned the win, working five and two-thirds of an inning and
striking out four, while Kevin Pankow worked the ninth for the save, getting
himself out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs.
Trailing 2-0 in the second game, Peetz hit an RBI double in the bottom of
the sixth inning to pull within a run, but Platteville (14-23, 9-13 WIAC)
scored two runs on errors by the Pointers in the seventh to seal the game.
UWSP also hit into three double plays in the contest. |
