The players must have been tired from running around the bases as the score of the nightcap was much lower than that of the opener as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point dropped a doubleheader to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at University Field.

UWO, the defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, won the opener 16-11 and took the followup 4-1.

A back-and-forth affair, Game 1 saw UWO tie the score at 11 when leadoff hitter Jeremy Jirschele belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning. He also provided the go-ahead run for the Titans (22-2, 11-1 WIAC) in the ninth as part of his 4-for-5 day.

First baseman Matt Peetz went 4-for-4, catcher Joe Waksmonski went 3-for-5, and centerfielder Chuck Brehm drove in three runs.

Brian Gerl went 2 2/3 innings, gave up a run on three hits, struck out one and walked none in picking up the win.

Kevin Pankow went two full, gave up six runs on seven hits and fanned two while walking one in taking the loss.

Second baseman Jake Frombach was the only Pointer to knock more than one hit in the second game, going 2-for-4 as Jordan Timm held UWSP (11-7, 5-3 WIAC) to five hits.

J.C. Reinke held Oshkosh scoreless until the third inning, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking two through seven innings in taking the loss.

Designated hitter Steve Wiczek tallied his first home run of the season, and second of his career, to pull UWSP to within 2-1 in the fifth before Timm shut the door on his fourth complete game of the season.

In the opener, UWO scored 16 runs for the sixth time in its 11-game winning streak while UWSP saw its own nine-game streak snapped. The Titans are the top-ranked team in the Midwest Region and are tied with Emory (Ga.) for second nationally, both according to in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll.
