Jones Ties
UW-Stevens Point Baseball Career Home Run Mark
Senior Ryan Jones tied UW-Stevens Points all-time
career home run record after hitting three solo homers in the Pointer
baseball teams 6-5 eight inning win over Loras on Friday in Bloomington,
Ill.
Jones, an Eau Claire native, homered to leftfield
in the first inning, rightfield in the third inning and centerfield in the
fifth inning to give him four home runs in four games this season and 32 for
his career. His career total matches Mike Reuchel, who accomplished the feat
from 1986-89. Jones had a single-season record 14 home runs in 2002 and hit
12 homers last season.
His home runs were the Pointers only runs
entering the bottom of the seventh inning when they trailed 4-3. With two
outs, Mike Hall reached after the first baseman dropped a throw from
shortstop. Jones was then intentionally walked and Joe Waksmonski singled
home Hall to tie the game.
Loras scored in the top of the eighth and the
Pointers tied the game on a leadoff home run by Matt Polomis. Nat Richter
walked, stole second and moved to third on a bunt single by Chuck Brehm,
before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jake Frombach.
The Pointers are now 2-2 and played Illinois
Wesleyan late Friday. They will play St. Olaf on Saturday in Bloomington. |
