Major:
Communication with Media
Production Emphasis;
Writing Minor
Hometown:
Appleton, WI
Extracurricular/Campus Activities:
I am involved
with the Student
Television station on campus.
I really enjoy
spending time at STV even when I’m
not working because I have met a lot of fantastic people by
being a member of the organization.
I love that I was able to
get a job right on campus that is
great experience for my intended field of work in the future.
I am also a member of
Lambda Pi Eta, the
Division of Communication Honor Society, where I work with other
Communication students to organize volunteer and fundraising
activities.
Why did you
choose to attend UWSP?
When I graduated from high school I knew that I wanted to work
with television and media.
When I was looking at different schools I noticed that
many of the majors that were offered were very specifically
broadcasting or
mass media. Although this is what I was interested in, UWSP
appealed to me because the major that they offered was
Communication. I decided that
because Communication was a much broader major, but still
included television, it would be easier for me to find a job
after graduation because I would have a wider range of course
work. Also, I am from
Favorite event on campus:
I love when
Centertainment brings hypnotists to campus!
I also love the University Center theater because it
plays movies that aren’t on DVD yet and its completely free!
Favorite UWSP memory:
My favorite memory is being a part of Trivia.
The trivia contest
that 90FM (the student radio station) puts on annually is so
much fun to be a part of.
I didn't actually compete on a team, but I interviewed
teams to air on the Student Television Station.
It is a lot of fun to meet people from the community who
participate.
What do you like most about going to
UWSP?
My favorite part about attending UWSP is the
people! There is rarely a
day when I walk between classes and I DON’T pass somebody, both
students and professors, that I can say "hi" to.
I
love the atmosphere of the campus and I love that class sizes
are small. Almost every
professor I have had at UWSP knows my name.
I know that when I am in class I am more than just a name
on the class list, but I am a person.
Favorite hangout spot on campus:
My favorite place on campus is the
Brewhaus.
I love that it is so relaxed and it smells great!
During the day it is a great place to study and read, and
at night it is buzzing with people socializing and playing pool.
What do you like best about the Stevens Point community?
The Stevens Point community is a lot like where
I’m from. It's a small
town, but it has a lot to offer.
It's a perfect college town because you can get to most
places by walking. I also
love that it is right on the river, because that is a great
place to go to relax.
I've even canoed down the river!
How has your interaction with professors benefited your
education?
The faculty at UWSP is so accessible for students.
I have never had a professor that I have been nervous to
talk to after class about a question I might have.
In the Communication department especially, every faculty
member will help you with course work, internships, letters of
recommendation, and career portfolios.
What are your career goals?
After graduation I want to work as
either a reporter for a news station or get a job with a company
doing media-relations work.
How has UWSP prepared you for your future?
My course work and extra curricular activities
have really prepared me well for jobs in media because I have
worked first hand with the equipment that I would be using if I
get a job at a news station or at a production company.
I also really grew as a person here. I learned
responsibilities because I was living away from my parents and
family for the first time.
What advice would you give to a new UWSP student?
Throughout college I have repeatedly
heard “you get what you put into it.” and that is very clich,
but it is so true!
If you take advantage of the student organizations, career
services, on- campus events, and seminars that UWSP offers, you
will be able to gain so much from those four years.
If you choose to do your school work and that’s all, I
really think you would be missing a huge part of the experience.
