Mission

The Foreign Student & English as a Second Language Programs assist international students to be productive and contributing members of the UWSP academic community while facilitating campus and community utilization of the vast cultural resource embodied in the university’s international student population. To these ends, we strive for excellence in providing international students and visiting scholars with immigration services, intensive English as a second language instruction, advising, and campus & community programming.

Values

Our department values:

  • Explorations of diversity offer opportunities for learning. We believe the educational climate of the University is enhanced when individuals of differing backgrounds, life experiences, faiths, beliefs, and worldviews are encouraged to partake of and welcomed into mutually-respectful learning collaborations.
  • The University is a community of learners. Students, faculty, and staff alike are obligated by their voluntary acceptance of membership in this community to actively contribute to the educational mission of the University.
  • Learning is a lifelong endeavor. Our efforts with, for, and on behalf of our students, colleagues, and community must honor previous learning & existing knowledge while encouraging constituents’ on-going educational endeavors.
  • Cross-cultural understanding serves the common good. International education advances learning and scholarship, builds respect among different peoples, and encourages constructive leadership in a global community.
