November 2010

Seven area teachers have been recognized for mentoring future teachers in their classrooms through the student teacher program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The sixth $10,000 Oscar W. Neale Fellowship, sponsored by the Oscar W. Neale Memorial Endowment, was given to Kathy Hansel, a learning resource teacher at St. Stanislaus School in Stevens Point. The fellowship will support the PAWS Literacy Lab (Point’s Alliance with St. Stanislaus) that will connect UWSP education students with St. Stanislaus students as they incorporate art and music into the teaching and learning of reading.
The Tom Hayes Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Teacher Education was given to Boyd Campbell, Nekoosa, a former university supervisor who worked with UWSP student teachers for ten years.
Melissa Devries, of Auburndale, was honored by the Student Council for the Social Studies. She is a seventh and eighth grade teacher at Auburndale Middle School.
Barb Beaudette of Chippewa Falls was honored by Kappa Delta Pi, UWSP’s education honor society. She is a first grade teacher at Halmstad Elementary School.
Allison Bancker of Stevens Point was honored by the Student Wisconsin Education Association. She is a second grade teacher at Washington Elementary School in Stevens Point.
Maggie Daffinson (who passed away this spring) was honored by the Association for the Education of Young Children. A teacher at the A.C. Keifer Center, Daffinson taught for 35 years, mostly serving young children with disabilities. Her exuberance, warmth, sincerity and humor lit up every classroom, meeting or home visit.
Susan Morzewski of Wisconsin Rapids was honored by the Student Council for Exceptional Children, is a learning disabilities teacher at Howe Elementary School.

May 2010

The Albertson Medallion Award, recognizing academic achievement and student involvement, is the most prestigious award the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point bestows to students. No more than 1% of graduates from the entire academic year are recognized with this award each May. Four of this year's thirteen award recipients graduated from a teacher preparation program! Congratulations to Michelle Butkus-Cornell, Lynette Hughes, Andrew Osegard, and Leah Sedlacek!

Congratulations to Dr. Li Bardon for receiving the University Excellence in Teaching Award!  This award stresses the importance of distinguished teaching, recognizes the contributions of outstanding teachers, and emphasizes the commitment of the University to teaching excellence. Nominees must have stimulated students toward a high standard of scholarship and an active interest in learning.

Congratulations to Dr. Paula DeHart for receiving the University Service Award!  This award recognizes outstanding service to the University and/or community and normally spans a multi-year period.

Dr. Patty Caro and Dr. Ellen Browning presented "Culturally Relevant Practices Involving Guidance and Discipline with Young Children" at the Council for Exceptional Children National Conference in Nashville, TN.

Dr. Kym Buchanan and two students presented "Engines of Greatness: A free social studies card game" at the at the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies Conference in Madison, WI.

Dr. JoAnne Katzmarek presented "We're so Into Science! Writing and Talking that Enhances Science Learning" at the National Science Teacher's Convention in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Paula DeHart and three UWSP students - Melissa Dyszelski, Christa Hidde, and Chris Petrie, presented "Rethinking Separation of Church and State to Teach Religious Tolerance: Comparing the U.S. and UK" at the WCSS Great Lakes Regional Conference in Madison, WI.

Dr. Paula DeHart and Garrett Jones (UWSP Master's student) presented "The Critical Role of Assessment in Transforming Social Studies Instruction" at the WCSS Great Lakes Regional Conference in Madison, WI.

February 2010

Dr. Pat Shaw (along with Patricia Ploetz) presented "Understanding by Design: Faculty Development and Accountability in Higher Education" at the ACCTE 62nd Annual Meeting and Exhibits: Preparing Educators for the New World, in Atlanta, GA.

November 2009

Dr. Perry Cook, Maggie Beeber, and John Gaffney presented at the 1st annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Career Day at UW-Stevens Point on November 6, 2009.

Dr. Christine Gould presented "Meet the Mini-Einstein's: A Diagnostic Pre-School Approach" and "What's Wrong with Kindergarten?" at the National Association for Gifted Children Annual Conference in St. Louis, MO on November 6-7, 2009.

October 2009

Dr. Quinn Stanley and five students - Melissa Dyszelski, Jenna Bolduc, Melissa Bjorkman, Stacey Hoffman, and Kevin Hill - presented Invisible disabilities in the college classroom at the Celebrate ALL Disabilities Conference at UWSP.

Dr. Patty Caro, UWSP in collaboration with Dr.Ellen Browning, Edgewood College presented “When children Get Angry:  Culturally Relevant and Developmentally Appropriate Practice” at the National Division for Early Childhood Conference in Albuquerque, NM.

 

JoAnne Katzmarek presented “Reading Comprehension:  Two Classics Revisited” at the WI Council of Teacher of English Annual Convention in Milwaukee, WI.

 

Maggie Beeber and John Gaffney coordinated a Praxis II Study Group for Early Childhood, Elementary, and Exceptional Education majors to prepare students for the Praxis II exam.

 

September 2009

Maggie Beeber, Advising Coordinator and Teacher Certification Officer was awarded an Advising Excellence Award at the Wisconsin Academic Advising Association Conference in Appleton, WI.

July 2009

Dr. Quinn Stanley gave two presentations (1) A Wooden dog vs. "live long and prosper" and (2) Unhealthy sexual involvement, recover, and potential at The Mississippi Conference on Child Welfare in Natchez, Mississippi. 

June 2009

UWSP's Kappa Delta Pi chapter received the Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) Award from KDP International. This is Kappa Delta Pi's third ACE award in the last three award cycles!

A total of 45 scholarships (totaling just under $46,000) were awarded to recipients at the annual School of Education Awards Banquet.
