HOW DID THEY MAKE THE CLAY PENS?

The Youth in College Program is designed for students who have completed grades K-8 and are functioning approximately 2 grade levels above their grade placement. Typical students who attend this challenging, fast-paced program are two grade levels above other students their age academically or intellectually.

Each class is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. weekdays for two weeks. Many of our classes involve group work which is impacted negatively by absences. Therefore, it is important that family vacations and other events be arranged to allow for the full two-week participation.

Youth in College is held at an elementary school located within the Stevens Point Area School District. The location varies from year to year.

General Information

An applicant from 5 year old Kindergarten through grade 3 is asked to forward a skills checklist (see School Recommendation Form) completed by his/her teacher that places the applicant generally in levels 3 and 4, a verification of reading level, and a positive teacher recommendation. If testing information is available at grade 3, it would be helpful to forward this information as well.

An applicant from grades 4 through 8 is asked to forward any one of the following achievement test scores or other information: WKCE results that place the applicant in the advanced level in at least one area, documentation of a school-administered achievement test with a percentile score of 90+ on any two subtests, verification of reading level, and a positive teacher recommendation. If alternate evidence of high ability not mentioned above is available, please contact the Network for Gifted Education office for further direction.

Once an applicant has forwarded achievement test scores at the required level, Streamlined Registration will be offered in subsequent years. If your student qualifies for Streamlined Registration, you will be notified through a mailing by the Youth in College staff.

If an applicant is home-schooled and does not have the above listed information, please contact the Network for Gifted Education office for further direction.

The full cost of providing the program to all students is $125.00. For students who reside within the Stevens Point Area Public School District, the parents pay $10.00, which is the general course supply fee charged to all students involved in summer school programs. This includes students who attend private schools located within the district or home schooled students who reside within the school district. The school district will pay the rest of the fee for you.

For students who reside outside the Steven Point Area Public School District, the program cost is $125.00 which reflects the full cost of providing the program. However, some school districts have chosen to help defray the cost of Youth in College. Please ask within your school district about this possibility.

Students in grades K-8 are enrolled in only one class.

With the exception of specialty areas, the instructors for the Youth in College program are licensed teachers who have been selected for their exemplary teaching, subject matter expertise, enthusiasm, and enjoyment of teaching high academic ability students. Classes are small (15) to allow for individualized instruction.
