About Us
In 1894, the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point began as the Stevens Point Normal School, whose primary purpose was to prepare future teachers. Today, the School of Education is the hub of teacher preparation programs at UWSP and we remain at the forefront of innovation in our field. Our undergraduate program is the home of Elementary Education - not only the largest, but also one of the most selective majors on campus. We also prepare future teachers who are majoring in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or earning certification in K-12 and Secondary Education.
Our
Students
Currently, over 1200 full-time undergraduate students are enrolled in
our teacher preparation programs. Our undergraduate students are known
on campus and in the Stevens Point community as being academically
engaged, highly motivated, and actively involved. In addition, over
1,000 practicing teachers are enrolled in our on-campus,
technology-based, and site-based graduate programs.
Our
Faculty
Our faculty will remind you of your favorite middle school or
kindergarten teachers, the ones who saw your potential then, and still
do. They have been selected from nationwide pools of candidates for
their subject matter knowledge, their ability to guide university
students in intellectual discovery, and their strong research
backgrounds. Our faculty members also bring practical skills with them
as they have been award-winning teachers at the elementary and secondary
levels. Over 90 percent of our courses are taught by full-time faculty
members who hold a Ph.D. in their respective fields.
Accreditation
UW-Stevens Point's teacher education programs are accredited by the
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Career
Planning
At present, close to 70 percent of our graduates secure full-time
positions and another 20 percent find part-time employment. Typically,
employment rates in the high-need areas are considerably higher. These
areas include chemistry, English as a second language, special
education, family and consumer sciences, mathematics, physics, Spanish,
and speech/language pathology.
SOE
